** The way the rain feels... a simple sketch... yet it captures the most delicate, yearning emotions of high schoolers. This is the often-overlooked treasure, *Hori-san to Miyamura-kun OVA 2*. She's the radiant, perfect student at school, yet she's a plain-faced homemaker at home, doing housework. He's the gloomy, quiet kid at school, yet he's got long hair and nine piercings outside of it. These two, who should be on parallel tracks, begin to tentatively explore each other, because of a chance encounter in a humid rainy season. The mood begins to change in this second installment. The secrets that have been hidden start to ripple because of the student council president, Sengoku. The misdelivered stack of papers is like a stone thrown into a calm lake, not only breaking the tranquility of school life, but also allowing Miyamura, who has always been hiding in his shell, to feel that burning desire to protect someone for the first time. **

** If the later TV animation is a beautiful Japanese dessert, then this OVA is more like a bowl of steaming home-cooked rice porridge. It's plain going in, but the aftertaste is all the taste of life. Its art style does "deter" a lot of viewers who pursue sophistication, but those almost draft-like lines precisely capture the transparent, sensitive, and fragile emotions of adolescence. Director Erkin Kawabata doesn't use gorgeous transitions, but instead focuses the camera on the window grilles blurred by the heavy rain and the intertwined fingers of the young man and woman. Matsuoka Yoshitsugu's voice acting at the time really had a rare, raw bluntness, and he brought to life Miyamura's cautious, yet rich inner personality. The brilliance of this film is that it's not in a rush to push the plot forward, but instead kneads all the tension into those unspoken silences. You'll find that the most touching confession is not "I love you," but the umbrella held open in the rain, which just happens to shield the two of them.
