It all starts in a small taxi on a late night in Hong Kong. Two strangers, Jeannie the flight attendant and Alan the engineer, become intertwined due to a misunderstanding, their story begins with a rather unromantic “hero saves damsel” scenario, and they rapidly fall into a whirlwind called love. Director Lin Ai-hua uses an almost cruel calmness to slice this relationship into twelve nights. At first, there are endless phone calls, meeting each other across the city, the fanaticism of seeing the other's breath carrying the sweetness of honey. However, when the tide of dopamine recedes, those quirks once seen as lovely turn into incomprehensible entanglement, those late-night intimacies turn into endless cold wars and questioning. In this love game, Jeannie desperately tries to grab the fading temperature, only to find that the harder she pulls, the further her partner retreats. The film doesn't provide a standard answer, but takes you through a complete closed loop from hot to cold, from reunion to relief, until you discover that some reunions are actually just for a more thorough goodbye.

This film is almost a relationship mine-clearing guide for all urban men and women, or even a "post-mortem report" on love. The twenty-year-old Cecilia Cheung is breathtakingly beautiful. Her full devotion, even somewhat morbidly persistent girl feeling, is vividly interpreted. Eason Chan, on the other hand, brings to life an ordinary man who goes from being affectionate to tired, and finally becomes indifferent and exhausted. The most heartbreaking thing about the film is its truth. It doesn't film those illusory romances, it specializes in those most secret and unbearable moments between couples: like being restless while waiting for a phone call, like deliberately saying the most hurtful things during an argument, like that self-moved "I've done so much for you, why don't you appreciate it". It's like a mirror, reflecting our clumsiness and selfishness in intimate relationships. The most sigh-inducing thing is the hint about "reincarnation". When everything settles, a new encounter occurs at the street corner, as if foreshadowing that the cycle of the next "Twelve Nights" has begun. If you are in a hot relationship, or have just walked out of a heartbreak, after watching this film, you may have a new, even somewhat reverent understanding of the word "love".
