In the quiet coastal town of Carmel, California, the waves crash against the rocks, and smoke curls in the radio studio. Dave lights a cigarette, and speaks with a deep, magnetic voice into the microphone. A woman on the other end of the line always calls at the same time, repeating the same phrase with a tone that is both a plea and a touch of obsession, "Play Misty for me." It sounds like the start of a romance, but Dave doesn't know that this voice is about to become his unending nightmare. As the town's most popular late-night DJ, Dave is used to being surrounded by spotlights and admirers. When he meets a woman named Evelyn at a bar, he thinks it's just a casual fling between adults. Evelyn seems smart, open, and even a little alluring. Dave thinks that it's nothing more than an accidental relief in the long night. However, when he tries to leave in the morning, he realizes that he has stepped into a bottomless pit. Evelyn's love is like a sudden tsunami, quickly flooding Dave's boundaries. She crashes into his apartment uninvited, shreds his clothes, and when she discovers he's trying to get back on track, her eyes show a chilling madness. That possessiveness has gone beyond the realm of emotion and become a destructive obsession. As the elegant jazz music once again plays in the live stream, the pair of eyes peering from the window are twisting the romantic melody into a sharp blade, step by step. Then there's the review…

This is Clint Eastwood's stunning directorial debut, where he shreds the image of the Western tough guy and throws himself into a psychological thriller full of modern anxiety. The film's greatest achievement is the creation of a suffocating atmosphere. It doesn't rely on cheap, gory scenes, but uses the gloomy, damp fog of the California coastline to pull the audience into the abyss of unease, bit by bit. Jessica Walter's performance is simply legendary. She perfectly embodies "face changing." One moment, she's a gentle admirer, and the next, she's in a state of crazed madness with dilated pupils. That sense of emotional rupture is scarier than any monster. The film's portrayal of the fear of "invasion of private space" is vivid, and what's most frightening is not the distant killer, but the stranger with your house key, sitting on your bed, who thinks they know you best. The use of music in the film is also inspired. The classic "Misty" was originally a healing jazz classic, but in the context of this film, it becomes a psychological cue, like a death knell. Whenever the melody plays, you know danger is brewing in the shadows. If you like suspense that builds gradually, making your palms sweat, this half-century-old work can still make you check if your doors and windows are closed tight late at night. So, yeah, that's what I'm thinking. Avoiding any spoilers, of course, but hoping to make it sound intriguing. No markdown needed, just a straightforward recommendation.
